Type K thermocouple EMF reference table

The complete Type K EMF table from −200 °C to +1370 °C at a 0 °C reference junction, ready to read on screen or export to CSV for your own calculations.

17 verified reference points between -200 °C and 1370 °C. Values are millivolts at a 0 °C reference junction for a standardised Type K pair. Points are spaced at 100 °C, with the negative tail closed at −200 °C and the top closed at 1370 °C.

Temperature (°C) EMF (mV) Sensitivity at point (µV/°C)
-200 -5.891 -
-100 -3.554 23.4
0 0.000 35.5
100 4.096 41.0
200 8.138 40.4
300 12.209 40.7
400 16.397 41.9
500 20.644 42.5
600 24.905 42.6
700 29.129 42.2
800 33.275 41.5
900 37.326 40.5
1000 41.276 39.5
1100 45.119 38.4
1200 48.838 37.2
1300 52.410 35.7
1370 54.819 34.4

The sensitivity column is the average slope across the interval ending at that point, shown to make the curvature of Type K visible: it is highest at low temperature and falls away toward the top of the range.

Reading the table in practice

  • Check the reference first. A millivolt figure is meaningless without saying what the cold junction was doing. If your instrument is not compensated to 0 °C, correct for that before comparing.
  • Watch the green-rot window. Between 800 °C and 1050 °C in low-oxygen or reducing service, the Chromel leg oxidises selectively and the reading drifts. Type N is the usual answer in that band.
  • Hold the installation to the certificate. The table is the nominal curve; the spool certificate is what your loop actually has to meet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What reference junction is this Type K table based on?

0 °C. Every millivolt figure is the EMF of a standardised Type K pair with the reference junction held at the ice point, which is the convention IEC 60584-1 and ASTM E230 publish against. A reading taken with a different cold-junction temperature is not directly comparable without correction.

Why does the table stop at 1370 °C?

Because that is the top of the verified span for the insulation and construction we supply against. Short-term use above it shortens the life of the Chromel leg sharply, and the green-rot window between 800 °C and 1050 °C in low-oxygen service has to be designed around rather than extrapolated through.

Can I download the table for my own spreadsheet?

Yes, the Export CSV button writes the whole table to a file in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the file can be dropped straight into a calibration sheet or a scaling calculation.

Do the values include wire tolerance?

No. They are the nominal standardised curve, not your spool's measured output. Two Type K spools both inside Class 1 tolerance can still differ from each other, which is why a batch EMF certificate is the figure to hold a real installation against.

Want the certificate behind the curve?

We ship Type K bare and stranded wire with a furnace-batch-traceable EMF certificate to IEC 60584-1 / ASTM E230.
